DILUTION RATIO GUIDELINES

We dilute essential oils for a few reasons, one being when you use a carrier oil you reduce the essential oils evaporating into the air. Another big reason is to help reduce the chance of any skin irritations or sensitisation occurring. Our oils are very pure & should be treated with lots of respect. I have included dōTERRA’s guidelines for dilution that Dr Hill recommends.

Note – 1 part essential oil equals 1 drop & 1 part of Fractionated Coconut Oil equals 1 drop

Example – For 1:2 ratio in 5 ml (100 drops) roller ball equals about 2.5 mls of Essential Oils (50 drops)

To identify which oils are N – Neat, S – Sensitive & D – Dilute refer to the fact sheets for all oils in the A-Z Guide to Single Oils & A-Z Guide to Blends.

​5 ml (1/6 oz) Roller Ball Bottle = 100 drops (1 tsp)

10 ml (1/3 oz) Roller Ball Bottle = 200 drops (2 tsp)

30 ml (1 oz) Roller Ball Bottle = 600 drops (6 tsp)

​This is the guide I personally use for my family to make up roller balls, spray bottles & spritzer blends with great success.

As a general rule 1 drop of Essential Oil = 1% (per teaspoon 5 ml) of carrier oil

1 drop per 10 mls for babies is recommended

USING YOUR OILS SAFELY

Essential oils are very safe and have few side effects. The main concern is skin sensitivity but when you follow some simple guidelines, they are extremely safe.

I recommend always diluting your essential oils with a carrier oil to reduce the chance of any skin sensitivity occurring. Many do apply oils neat but it is important to follow dōTERRA’s guidelines.

  • Never apply oils neat for babies and children, always dilute with carrier oil.
  • Always do a test strip first when using a new oil or blend. I like to use my forearm.
  • Some of the oils are ‘Warm Oils” like oregano and clove and can feel hot when used without a carrier oil. Peppermint is a ‘Cooling Oil’ and should be diluted as well.
  • If you do feel a burning or sting, apply some carrier oil or even milk to the area, never use water, it will drive the oils deeper into the skin.
  • Avoid the eyes, ears and nose area when applying oils.
  • Oregano is a very powerful essential oil & should be treated that way. It’s best to give your body a break after 10 days of use.
  • Storing your oils in plastic can cause some grades of plastic to erode due to the purity of our oils. You can use PET 1 & 2 or HDPE 2 grade plastics.
  • Some oils are photosensitive like the citrus oils. After they have been applied to exposed skin you should avoid the sun for 12 hours as it can result in dark pigmentation.
  • Those with critical health conditions like high blood pressure or epilepsy should consultant a doctor before using essential oils.

I recommend starting with less essential oil & building up from there. If you think it’s not quite as effective as you would like, you can always add a few more drops to the mix.
